YOUTH AT WORK
3/23/10
Spring has sprung. And the adolescent team at EmberWood Center is turning its attention from pumpkin-carving parties and winter holiday meals to … park renovating!
One of the city’s oldest parks is located one block from the door of EmberWood Center. This small, triangular grassy area will receive a facelift by EWC’s adolescent clients and collaborators, starting with a groundbreaking on March 25, a big push in April, and continuing throughout the summer.
Two Indianapolis-based nonprofits — the Emergent Leadership Institute and Global Peace Initiatives – along with the Windsor Park Neighborhood Association will add volunteers to EWC’s adolescent clients and staff, as well as donate perennials to restore the park to a former version of itself. According to Sharon Young, EWC After-School Community Coordinator who is organizing the initiative, there will be a three-day event April 23 to 25 in conjunction with Global Youth Service Day. There will also be an event on May 1 involving Global Peace Initiative’s “1 By Youth” volunteers. EWC youth will continue to work on the project as part of their community service component throughout the summer.
Monetary and plant donations are welcome, as the project is not supported by any grants.
EmberWood Center promotes growth, respect and integrity through community-based services to address the cycle of addition with individuals and families.
The Emergent Leadership Institute engages young people to become holistic members of their community through volunteerism and service learning.
Global Peace Initiatives conveys the message that when creativity is nurtured and possibility thinking is encouraged, hope is nurtured.
Windsor Park Neighborhood Association invites all residents to come out and improve the appearance of their neighborhood!
